Montreal, October 25, 2005 – Saputo Inc. this morning announced renewal of its partnership with the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec, and will contribute a total of $425,000 over a period of five years. Saputo also awarded an amount of $41,000 to 10 athletes in different disciplines as part of the bursary program run by the Foundation.
Saputo renewed its financial backing for four Quebec athletes it has been supporting for a number of years, these being Bryan Milonja, in trampoline, cross-country skier Dasha Gaïazova and cyclists Audrey Lemieux and Martin Gilbert.
In addition, three new Quebec athletes have joined the ranks of Saputo bursary recipients: in long track speed skating, Marilou Asselin, in Olympic wrestling, Martine Dugrenier, and diver Meaghan Benfeito.
Lastly, one of the special features of the Saputo program is to make bursaries available to athletes hailing from outside Quebec who train in a national training centre located in the province. Thus, three athletes from outside Quebec today received a Saputo bursary. These are judoka Frazer Will from Star City, Saskatchewan; biathlete Jaime Robb from Edmonton; and in water polo, Vancouver native Kerry Kaukinen.
For Saputo, this commitment offers athletes the means to make their dreams come true, enabling them to push back their limits a little more each day on the road to success. Saputo attaches great importance to athletic development. Its commitment is rooted in the conviction that healthful eating bolstered by sports activities is synonymous with balanced development for future generations.
The president of the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec, Mr. Claude Chagnon, stated that he was very happy that the partnership had been renewed, an arrangement that allows for consolidation of the Saputo grant program over the next five years for the greater benefit of our athletes.
